Weak as a kitten was pretty much how I would of described myself after the Sonisphere weekend but no rest for the wicked as it was time to pick myself back up and get ready to see a once in a lifetime show – The Foo Fighters at the Roundhouse, Camden.
When this gig was announced I was so excited – after missing them perform at Oxegen I was gutted, but thankfully this gig saved me from flying all over the place to see them.
They were hands down the highlight act of this year’s iTunes festival.
When Grohl promised to tear the Camden venue ‘a new one’, myself and the 3,000-strong crowd just knew that it was going to be a night to remember and was it just!
The band knocked out an incredible high energy 2.5 hour set that included hits from their back catalogue along with tracks from ‘Wasting Light’ and also guest appearances from Lemmy and Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor.
Lemmy joined the band on stage to preform ‘Shake Your Blood’ and Brian May and Rogar Taylor joined the band for the second last song of the night where they belted out ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ with Taylor Hawkins taking the mike to sing lead vocals on the track which was the highlight of the set for me.
One thing I have always loved about the Foo’s is their relationship with their fans and how they just seem so down to earth. When a mosher got a little out of hand and started to fight on the floor, his actions were being watched by Grohl himself, who stopped the show and said: ‘No no no no no, you don’t f***ing fight at my show you a*******. ‘Who’s that right there, let me see him. Who’s fighting right now, let me see him. It’s that f***Ing guy in the striped shirt. Hey motherf****er look at you, hey, look at me.
‘Get the f*** out of my show right now. Get the f*** out!’ ‘you don’t come to my show and fight, you come to my show and f***ing dance!’ This outburst brought the house down with applause and a member of the bands crew went out and got the fan who was punched and brought him back to sit at the side of the stage for the rest of the show with both Dave and Chris coming over to speak to the speechless fan – what a band!
Another part of the show – right before the band preformed ‘Best of You’, Dave was talking to the crowd about how in another show when he announced that the next track was going to the bands last and how a female fan in the front row got really mad and was pissed at him (see the video below). He then went on to point that that exact fan was standing in the front row of the gig….seriously this band just keep giving and giving!
Among the crowd for the gig along with Lemmy and Rogar Taylor and Brian May were rock legends Metallica, Seasick Steve and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. The guys are certainly popular with other musicians and it is easy to see why. There is nothing better than watching a band who love what they do and make no apologies for it!
I do hope the band announces a winter arena tour for Europe – I thought the obsession with the Foo’s would die down after I got to see them again when in fact it has only made it worse! That gig was literally the best gig I have ever been too and hope they come back to Ireland and the UK very soon.
